Wandsworth ‘Toast Rack’ House Renovation with Basement & Roof Extension
This project involved the full refurbishment and expansion of a 3-storey end-of-terrace house located in the highly sought-after ‘Toast Rack’ area near Wandsworth Common. The brief was to create a more functional, flexible living space while celebrating the home’s original architecture.
On the ground floor, we replaced an outdated conservatory with a striking asymmetrical side and rear extension, finished in white render and topped with a pitched roof. The playful roof form adds height and visual interest to the open-plan kitchen and dining area, clearly distinguishing the new structure from the original house while enhancing its period character.
A large ridge roof light was introduced to break the new extension visually and physically from the existing rear elevation. This architectural detail allows natural daylight to flood into the kitchen, dining room, and sitting area. Full-width sliding glass doors open the interior to the garden, creating a strong indoor-outdoor connection.
The existing cellar was extended and transformed into a habitable lower-ground floor, anchored by a large games room. An open stair connects this level to the main living space, and a feature light well was carved out to the side of the stair to draw daylight into the basement hallway. At the heart of this level is a spiral wine cellar, serving as both a functional element and a sculptural centrepiece.
A new mansard roof at the rear and a second-storey gable-end extension allowed for the creation of an additional bedroom and bathrooms in the roof space. These additions significantly increased the home’s usable floor area while remaining sympathetic to the surrounding architecture.
