Drawing room with fireplace and new glass doors to the hallway

Victorian House Renovation Near Wandsworth Common

This project involved the full refurbishment and spatial reconfiguration of a 3-storey semi-detached Victorian house near Wandsworth Common. While the property had previously been extended to the side, the internal layout was disjointed, resulting in dark, narrow spaces with limited access from the main hallway.

We reimagined the ground floor as a more flexible and flowing space, featuring a large, full-width kitchen, dining, and living area to the rear with direct garden access. A new central circulation zone was created to improve flow between the front drawing room, study, boot room, and rear kitchen extension. The layout also includes a separate playroom that can be closed off for privacy and a new connection to the front garden through the pantry/boot room. The south-facing rear extension maximises natural light throughout the day, enhancing the sense of openness and warmth across the ground floor.

We redesigned the staircase to open up the hallway and provide a visual and spatial connection across all three levels. The result is a light-filled vertical core with views through the full height of the house.

The existing first and second floor layouts were reworked, including the addition of a new first-floor rear extension, to create a generous master suite, ensuite bathrooms, and larger, better-connected bedrooms.

To ensure architectural coherence, the rear extensions were built using traditional London yellow stock brick with red brick detailing around openings—subtly referencing the style and materiality of the original Victorian structure while giving the home a clean, contemporary edge.
