Victorian House Remodel with Full Basement & Rear Extension in London
This project involved the complete remodelling and refurbishment of a six-bedroom, end-of-terrace Victorian house built circa 1880. Our clients—a family of five—sought to create a spacious, contemporary home that balances generous family living with thoughtful architectural detailing.
A two-storey rear extension was constructed, and the ground floor was reconfigured to form a large, open-plan kitchen, dining and living area. Full-height glass sliding doors create a seamless connection to the garden, opening onto a balcony with a covered seating area. Steps lead down to a landscaped patio and further down to a lower basement courtyard, establishing a strong relationship between inside and out.
A custom-built fish tank is set into the wall between the front drawing room and the rear living space, providing a playful yet striking visual connection across the ground floor. The same sliding glass doors are mirrored at basement level to create a consistent, unified rear elevation and maintain natural light and flow between floors.
The existing cellar was deepened and extended to form a full new basement, with front, side and rear lightwells allowing natural daylight to penetrate deep into the plan. The new space includes a playroom, cinema room, home gym, guest bedroom suite, utility room and plant room.
The upper floors were reconfigured to create well-proportioned bedrooms and bathrooms for a growing family. The master suite includes a spacious dressing area and a luxurious ensuite, accessed via a hidden door concealed within a wall of bespoke joinery—adding a layer of discreet sophistication.
