Modern dining room with a view of a lush outdoor garden. The garden has stepped to the raised patio, large potted plants, and green living wall to the rear

Contemporary Basement Renovation with Spiral Wine Cellar and Garden Connection

The aim of this project was to open up and lower the existing basement of a period property, enhancing natural daylight and creating a dramatic, light-filled kitchen and dining space. The basement was excavated to achieve an impressive 2.75m floor-to-ceiling height, while a frameless glass roof, large roof light, and 3.2m-high sliding glass doors in the new side and rear extension bring in abundant natural light.

Meticulous attention was paid to clean architectural lines, including flush skirting and wall finishes to create a minimal and seamless look throughout. A striking feature of the new dining area is a spiral wine cellar, which extends a further 2.5 metres below the floor—providing both visual interest and highly functional, climate-controlled storage.

The large sliding glass doors visually and physically connect the kitchen and dining space to the rear garden, conceived as an extension of the living area. A lush living wall becomes the focal point, with its vivid greenery emphasized by the surrounding dark-rendered garden walls, which draw the eye outward.

Internally, Italian smoked-glass sliding doors separate the bright kitchen/dining area from a more intimate front snug, painted in a deep brown tone to create a warm, cocoon-like contrast. This spatial transition enhances the experience of moving through the home—balancing openness and comfort.

The ground and first floors were also fully refurbished, with new bathrooms and comprehensive redecoration to unify the home’s updated aesthetic.
