Contemporary Zinc-Clad Kitchen & Gym Extension in Wimbledon Conservation Area
Situated on a generous plot within a Wimbledon conservation area, this detached home, originally built in 1995, was in need of modernisation and spatial rethinking. Our client approached us with a clear vision: to demolish the outdated dining/sun room, enhance the kitchen extension, repurpose the existing garage, and achieve a much stronger indoor-outdoor connection with the garden from both the kitchen-dining area and a new gym space.
We developed a bespoke architectural scheme that replaced the previous extension with a striking zinc-clad addition featuring a dual-pitched roof. This design language references the original hipped garage roof while introducing bold, asymmetrical gables that give extra height and identity to each new space—one housing the open-plan kitchen-dining area, and the other, a large home gym. This configuration breaks the massing into two expressive yet cohesive forms, each responding to the internal function and desired spatial quality.
To enhance the visual and physical connection with the garden, we specified thermally broken Crittall-style doors and windows from Maxlight, selected in a custom RAL tone that complements the warm hues of the Pimento Red zinc cladding. This bold material choice harmonises with the tones of the existing hung tiles and traditional roof of the house, while the rendered white forms link back to the original elevation, maintaining coherence with the character of the conservation area.
The former garage was completely reimagined, now accommodating a practical boot room and utility space at the front, while the rear has been transformed into a generously proportioned home gym with direct garden access. Large glazed openings allow both the kitchen and gym to feel connected to the landscape, maximising natural light and reinforcing the clients’ desire for stronger ties between internal and external spaces.
In addition to the new extension, we carried out ground floor reconfiguration, bathroom renovations on the upper floors, and introduced discreet air conditioning throughout to improve comfort. This whole-house approach ensured that the architectural language and functionality were consistent across all levels.
This Wimbledon kitchen and gym extension is now complete on site, and we are looking forward to sharing professional photography of the finished spaces soon. The project showcases our ability to blend traditional architectural context with contemporary forms and materials—making this a standout example of a contemporary house renovation in South West London.
